Green chilli dhal

Serves: 4
Ingredients:

Massor dhal – 1/2 cup
Moong dhal – 1/4 cup
Water – 2 1/2 cups
Ginger pulp – 1 tsp
Garlic pulp – 1 tsp
Grounded turmeric – 1/4 tsp
Fresh green chillies (chopped) – 2
Salt – 1/2 tsp

For the tarka:
Oil – 2 tsp
Onion (sliced) – 1
Mustard & onion seeds – 1/4 tsp
Dried red chillies – 4
Tomato (sliced) – 1

To garnish:
Fresh coriander (chopped) – 1 tsp
Fresh green chilli (seeded & sliced) – 2
Fresh mint (chopped) – 1 tsp

Method:
1. Pick over the lentils for any stones before washing them.
2. Boil the lentils in the water with the ginger, garlic, turmeric & chopped green chillies for about 15 mins, until soft.
3. Mash the lentil mixture down. The consistency of the mustard lentils should be similar to that of a creamy chicken soup.
4. If the mixture looks too dry, just add some more water. Season with salt.
5. To prepare the tarka, heat the oil & cook the onion with the mustard and onion seeds, dried red chillies & sliced tomato for 2 mins.
6. Pour the tarka over the dhal & garnish with fresh coriander, green chillies & mint.
